Fall Is A Great Time to Plant

Fall is a great time to plant in the Sunbelt.  From California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and all the way to Florida the weather becomes pleasant once again. Day and night time temperatures cool and the will to improve your landscape and garden returns.

Still warm soil temperatures allows your new plants to get established without the stress of oppressive heat.  All of your plants will thank you with a jump start in growth in the Spring.  Establishing a good root system in the Fall will show up in Spring with rapid vegetative growth.  Additionally, your plants will be better suited to deal with the stress of a long hot summer once again.

In general, cacti and succulents will start to go dormant when night temperatures are between 40-50 degrees faranheit.  Decreased day length also contributes to dormancy.  Cacti and succulents are also opportunistic in their growth.  After a good Fall or Winter rain and a brief warm up here in the Sonoran desert you can see our columnar cacti swell up and start to grow for a very short time.

Aloes are a very interesting case when it comes to planting in the Fall.  Aloes are native to South of the equator in Africa which means their Spring is our Fall.  Most aloes will actively grow and flower during the Fall through Spring seasons.  Aloe plants are often used in landscapes and container gardens to bring a splash of color to the offseason in landscapes, gardens and container gardens.  All of the aloes we offer at The Cactus Outlet are prolific bloomers.  Get out in your yard and take advantage of all the gardening and landscape improvement opportunites that the Fall season has to offer in warmer climates.
