The Curiosity cactus is the mutant form of the Peruvian apple cactus. The flowers and fruit that are produced by the Curiosity cactus are identical to the Peruvian apple cactus. Large, night blooming white flowers are followed by large red fruit with successful pollination. The fruit tastes like watermelon. The cold hardiness and sun hardiness are the same as well. Both plants will tolerate lite frost and night-time temperatures from 28-32 degrees Fahrenheit. If you wrap these plants in frost cloth and burlap they can sustain evening temperatures into the lower 20's. The only difference between the Peruvian apple cactus and the Curiosity cactus is the growth habit.
Irregular patterns of cellular division create odd balls and mutants in the cactus and succulent world. We have large crested saguaros here in the Sonoran desert. They occur at a rate of 1/100,000 plants. The Curiosity cactus is one such mutant. The Crested Blue Flame is another such mutant. The Totem Pole cactus is yet another mutant of the cactus world. We cultivate and sell all of these wonderful cacti mutants here at The Cactus Outlet.
The standard Peruvian apple cactus generally grows multiple arms and stems from the bottom of the main stem. The Curiosity cactus will grow this way as well and will also grow arms just about anywhere else on the plant. Colors can vary from dark green to blue depending on the growing season, sun exposure and temperature. The Curiosity cactus is truly a cactus worthy of it's common name.
